Urban Agriculture Program Supports Community 🍅 (Info)
At Hutton House, the Orchard Program is taking root, offering a transformative opportunity for adults with disabilities to grow personally and professionally. Over the course of 15 weeks, participants embark on a journey that combines three weeks of intensive pre-employment workshops with a 12-week paid placement in urban agriculture or hospitality.

Through hands-on learning at locations like Nathan’s Urban Farm and the Cavendish Community Food Hub, participants cultivate valuable skills in gardening, food security, and workplace readiness. The program also emphasizes career exploration, resume building, and interview preparation, empowering individuals to enter the workforce with confidence.

This initiative is more than just skill-building—it's about fostering inclusion, strengthening community food security, and helping participants cultivate independence and pride. By connecting individuals with meaningful work opportunities, the Orchard Program is planting seeds for a brighter, more inclusive future.

LOCAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Artist: Thérèse Grawey
Title: Hommage
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Hommage was inspired by the rocky coastal islands in Lake Superior. The trees are ragged, but persistent and will stand their ground under all types of challenges. There is beauty and serenity in the scene which speaks of strength, but invites quiet reflection.

FACTS & LAUGHS

DAD JOKE

For my birthday this year, I can only celebrate for half a minute.
It’s my thirty second birthday.

WORD ORIGINS

Whiskey 🥃

The word "whiskey" comes from the Gaelic phrase "uisce beatha" (Irish) or "uisge beatha" (Scottish), meaning "water of life." This was anglicized to "usquebaugh," then shortened to "usky," and finally evolved into "whisky" or "whiskey."2
